Mathra is a predominantly maroon plaid, originally from Kurtoe, but now more closely associated with Bumthang.

Mathra is worn by both men and women for daily use, but for festival wear, many women own a mathra kira embellished with sapma designs (mathra pesar). These were worn by many of the women attending rural festivals, and this style was also favoured by older women at Paro & Thimphu tsechus. See Mathra Pesar & Sethra Pesar
