Ah-Rum: Traditional dress

After the touristy atmosphere around Inle Lake in Burma, I found it a delight to travel up to the Shan hills and stay a few days in the less-visited town of Namshan.

One day I travelled on the back of a motorbike to visit some of the surrounding villages. In Ah-Rum, many of the women were wearing traditional dress, and this lovely lady was pounding up ginger, chilli, beans, salt & more in a huge mortar & pestle. Later, the village nuns invited me to lunch, and it was the best meal I ate anywhere in Burma: simple, fresh, and full of flavour!
