Last week I had the pleasure of taking Kay Faulkner’s East Meets West course at the Contextart Forum in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. We had the opportunity to apply techniques used on backstrap looms in West Timor and Burma to shaft looms.
I signed up primarily to learn about Timorese wrapping (Buna, pictured above) and how it differed from that which I had learned in Bhutan and Guatemala, but I loved also having the opportunity to try out several other warp-faced techniques, including Sotis:
My readers in North America may be interested in the East Meets West seminar that Kay will be presenting on this topic for Complex Weavers in June 2014
Looks great. How did you find out about the course? I’d love to go along to something similar but am not yet connected very well with the Australian weaving community, other than via my local Melbourne guild. Do you have any tips?

Your weaving guild newsletter and website may have links to other organisations, as well as announcements of events and classes.
Here’s a couple of lists of links from my local Fibre group to get you started:

Also ask at your weaving guild and local textile groups whether the group subscribes to any journals/magazines. These are another source of leads.
Here’s the links page on your guild’s site:

Thanks for all the links. I do belong the the Victorian guild but would be more than happy to travel for a good workshop in another location. I attended the Victorian summer school this year and it was excellent.
